Part 01 of 06
Everything that goes down a drain in the house leaves through one pipe to the tank.
Roots, grease and things that should never be flushed block it. Slow drains everywhere in the house at once usually mean the trouble is here or in the tank.
Part 02 of 06
Solids sink and form sludge, grease and light waste float as scum, and the liquid between them flows on. Bacteria break down what settles.

Part 03 of 06
A filter on the outlet keeps solids from leaving the tank and reaching the leach field.
It needs cleaning when the tank is pumped. A clogged filter backs the tank up; a missing one lets solids out into the field.
Part 04 of 06
Splits the liquid evenly between the trenches.
If it settles, tilts or clogs, one trench takes everything and wears out early.
Part 05 of 06
Carries the liquid from the box out into the leaching system.
Crushed or root-filled pipe starves part of the field.
Part 06 of 06
The soil does the final cleaning as the liquid seeps through gravel and earth.
Sludge that gets this far clogs the soil, and that is the expensive failure. Wet or muddy spots on the lawn, or sewage at the surface, mean it is already happening. A pump-out costs far less than a leach field.
